Everything You Can Do With The Multi Function Tail Gate

Pickup trucks are among the most useful vehicles on the road today. Still, automakers are constantly searching for new ways to improve utility and make their pickups even handier for owners. One way General Motors has tackled that challenge is by enhancing the tailgate of its full-size trucks. Both Chevrolet and GMC offer multi-function tailgates for the Silverado and Sierra that enable a variety of cargo-carrying positions. GMC’s product is called the MultiPro Tailgate, and it’s available on the Hummer EV pickup, Sierra 1500, and Sierra HD.

The MultiPro Tailgate has been around since 2019. It changes the basic tailgate setup into a two-piece design, with a smaller opening area at the top of the gate. It offers six positions to enable more effortless cargo loading, carrying larger items, and making stepping into the bed easier. 

The inner gate work surface opens the smaller portion at the top of the gate, creating a small platform for a laptop or other gear. It features a load stop that folds up to carry longer items while keeping them secure. The same load stop works when the tailgate is open flat, keeping items from sliding out of the bed. Opening the inner gate with the main tailgate open lets owners reach further into the bed, thanks to the cutout. That same function also forms part of the steps, and GMC offers a stereo system built into the gate for some models. 

Of course, the tailgate also works as a traditional tailgate, with easy open and close and assisted options available. GMC said the new 2024 Sierra 1500 offers more in-bed cargo space than any other short-bed competitor, with 63.9 cubic feet. A CarbonPro carbon fiber bedliner is also available, giving the truck a super-protected cargo area that can withstand almost any abuse. 

The MultiPro Tailgate is available for all Sierra models with a starting price of $595. Buyers can add a spray-on bedliner, a drop-in bedliner, a tri-fold tonneau soft top, lighting for the MultiPro Tailgate steps, and an EZ lift assist power lock and release tailgate.
