GMC Hummer SUV Impresses Skeptical Detroit Free Press Editor

The GMC Hummer EV SUV is an interesting beast. When GMC developed the new Hummer as an electric vehicle, the kitchen sink was thrown at it. There would be no expense spared in bringing customers exactly what they had always believed a Hummer to be: a larger-than-life, no-nonsense all-terrain vehicle that could basically still drive even after being blown up. But that also means that a Hummer doesn’t appeal to some people. 

Mark’s Opinion About Reviewing Cars 

Count Mark Phelan, a veteran automotive journalist from the Detroit Free Press, as one of those people that didn’t get the GMC Hummer, or so he thought. Mark said that even though he’s been testing Hummer vehicles since they started being sold to the public, he always respected what they could do, but they weren’t for him personally. His job, though, was to give people the facts and help them decide whether or not a Hummer was right for them.  

“They just weren’t my cup of tea. That’s fine. My job reviewing a vehicle is to determine whether or not it meets the reasonable expectations of the people who’ll buy it, not whether it suits my personal taste.” 

A Vehicle He Didn’t Expect to Fall in Love With 

Once Mark had the chance to put the SUV version of the Hummer EV through its paces, he found that his tune had changed, saying, “The new electric GMC Hummer SUV I just drove was different: The first Hummer I ever found myself wishing I got to know better. I enjoyed nearly everything about it. It looked terrific, with lustrous deep blue paint and gargantuan 35-inch off-road tires. The interior was comfortable, with plenty of passenger room and terrific Bose audio.” 

Size and Design 

The design of the GMC Hummer is meant to be big and tough, while still showing its luxury side. As Mark said, “The styling is as in-your-face as ever, but while other Hummers inhabit their own alternate universe, the SUV’s 196.8-inch length and overall size identify it as a competitor for vehicles like the BMW X7 and Rivian R1S. It fares well in that company.” 

Trim Levels, Power, Range, and Cargo Space 

Mr. Phalen tested a Hummer EV SUV in the tri-motor EV 3X trim that makes a whopping 830 horsepower. There is also an EV 2X trim available that features dual motors with 570 horsepower. With the dual-motor Hummer EV, you can tow a monstrous 11,500 pounds. The Hummer EV SUV has 35.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. Folding them down increases storage capacity to 81.8 cubic feet. With the available 20-module, double-stacked battery pack, the Hummer EV 2X SUV can drive for 311 miles before needing to charge, while the 24-module battery in the EV 3X has a range of 381 miles. However, opting for the Extreme Off-Road package reduces that range by just a bit to 359 miles—still quite a lot.  

Fast Charging Speed 

When using a Level 3 DC Fast Charger, the Hummer can add 100 miles of range in just 12 minutes, which is starting to get very close to how quickly a gas-powered car can fill up with fuel.
